Wellness Programming
Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice of paying attention and being present to the here and now. During these live group sessions, you'll learn tools and strategies you can apply to your daily life as well as benefit from support and wisdom from peers with disabilities who may have similar lived experience to your own. The group will be led by Alison Shapiro, a trained Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction teacher, with assistance from Steve Fidrych.
Dates: Starting January 9, 2025, Sportable's Mindfulness group will meet 2x/month, every 2nd and 4th Thursday

Who: Open to anyone who has a physical disability or visual impairment and can follow age appropriate instruction. Sportable Membership NOT required.
Weekly Wellness with VCU

Improving your health and wellness is like a marathon, not a sprint. It takes small steps over time to make big improvements! Led by VCU occupational therapy students, this in-person program will cover a variety of topics associated with wellness, such as social connectedness, daily movement, leisure, nutrition, volunteerism, and mindfulness. These sessions seek to provide the tools to help you explore new ways to promote your personal wellness, all while centering on connecting with peers and the community.

Adaptive Sports Programming
Archery

Experience the excitement and precision of Adaptive Archery! Sportable is proud to partner with Chesterfield County Parks & Recreation to bring you the basics of archery including rules, safety, and step-by-step shooting form for group-style target archery.
Archery is a fully inclusive sport, with adaptations that can accommodate individuals of all ages and abilities and can be done sitting or standing. Space is limited to 12 athletes per time slot.

Advanced Pickleball (Wheelchair and Para-Standing)

Pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in the country, combines many elements of tennis, badminton, racquetball, and ping-pong. Advanced Pickleball is a fast-paced game of strategy and precision for experienced players. Players will work on tournament-level pickleball skills with or without the presence of Sportable pickleball coaches.
This program is designed for adult athletes with advanced (3.0+) pickleball skills who plan to play at the tournament level. Athletes who plan to play in a sports chair must bring their own sports chair.

Who: Open to Sportable members, 18 years and older, who have experience playing pickleball. Athletes can play standing or in a sports wheelchair. This program is designed for adult athletes with advanced (3.0+) pickleball skills who plan to play at the tournament level. Wheelchair pickleball players must bring their own sports chair. Younger players may join with prior permission from program staff.
Cycling - Advanced/Competitive

Designed exclusively for advanced cyclists, Sportable’s Road Warriors Advanced Cycling team will have weekly workouts to maximize biking skill with focus on performance. Experienced coaches will provide you with additional workouts to complete on your own and will encourage you to use available technology to track your progress. You must own or lease a cycle from Sportable (limited availability).

Who: Restricted to eligible Sportable members, 14 years and older, who have their own cycle or are leasing a cycle from Sportable (limited availability) and can transport their cycle to the program independently. This ADVANCED program is for individuals interested in structured training to improve sports performance and potentially compete in paracycling races.

Cycling - Recreational

Recreational Cycling is one of the most inclusive sports as there is a bike to match nearly every individual’s ability, needs, and training interests. Athletes in small groups will enjoy beautiful rides on the scenic Capital Trail alongside experienced adaptive cycling coaches and qualified volunteers.

Adult Competitive Wheelchair Basketball

Designed for adult wheelchair basketball athletes with permanent lower limb impairments (i.e. Spina Bifida, Spinal Cord Injury, Amputee, Cerebral Palsy, and others). Wheelchair basketball promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Not all players use wheelchairs for everyday mobility. Players must be able to independently push themselves in a sports wheelchair.

Intermediate Pickleball (Wheelchair & Para-Standing)

Pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in the country, combines many elements of tennis, badminton, racquetball, and ping-pong. Intermediate Pickleball Players will have already learned court mobility, the different strokes and when to use them, and the rules and scoring of the game. They will increase their skills and improve strength and cardiovascular health under the instruction of Sportable pickleball coaches.
This program is designed for adult athletes with intermediate (2.5+) pickleball skills. Athletes who plan to play in a sports chair must bring their own sports chair.

Who: Open to Sportable members, 18 years and older, who have experience playing pickleball. Athletes can play standing or in a sports wheelchair. Women's Wheelchair Basketball

Designed for adult wheelchair basketball athletes with permanent lower limb impairments, wheelchair basketball promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. This team is specifically for women and non-binary athletes 16+.
The Sportable Women's Competitive Wheelchair Basketball team competes in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA).

Time: 10:00 AM -1:00 PM
Who: Players must have a permanent physical disability which consistently reduces the function of the lower limbs to a degree where they cannot run, pivot or jump at the speed and with the control safety, stability and endurance required to play running basketball as an able bodied player. Not all players use wheelchairs for everyday mobility. Must be at least 16 years of age to participate in this team.
CP Soccer - May

Learn new skills and experience the benefits of playing soccer at Sportable’s CP Soccer Program!
Designed exclusively for youth ages 5-high school with ambulatory cerebral palsy, stroke, or traumatic brain injury, the CP Soccer Program will focus on introducing skills, drills, small-sided activities, and most importantly – FUN!
The CP Soccer Program is open to players of all levels – no previous experience necessary - who will be led by expert coaches, including former U.S. Paralympic National Team player, Nick Creasey, and USSF A Licensed Soccer Director, Joe Farrell.

Golf

Join us to practice your swing, learn some of the basics and have some fun on the range!

Kayaking

In partnership with Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation, Sportable Flatwater Kayaking encourages physical fitness, nature exploration, and adventure.
Adaptive kayaking is one of Sportable’s most inclusive sports as kayaks can be adapted for a variety of physical disabilities using state-of-the-art equipment such as paddle pivots that allow one-arm control of the kayak and adaptations for wrist grips and seat position.
Kayakers benefit from being on the water and fully-immersed in nature while enjoying one of Richmond’s most popular destinations, the James River.

Who: The Flatwater program is open to ALL Sportable members, 14 years and older who meet the below safety criteria.
There is a weight capacity of 230lbs for the boats that are used at this program.
Athletes MUST meet the following Essential Eligibility Criteria:
- Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing)
- Independently maintain sealed airway passages while under water
- Independently hold head upright without neck / head support
- Manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion
- Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
- Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion
- Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket
Lacrosse

Wheelchair Lacrosse is perfect for athletes interested in a challenging sport that packs a punch and is played with speed, finesse, and teamwork. Expert coaching is provided to train the team for demanding, fast-paced competition regionally and nationally.

Swimming

This swimming program, in partnership with NOVA of Virginia Aquatics is led by NOVA’s full time professional coaches who are Certified Para Swimming Coaches (PSCC) as well as USA Swimming Certified. It is designed for athletes from Novice to Competitive, interested in strengthening their swimming skills and improving their fitness. You will have the opportunity to increase your comfort in the water, learn skills, drills and multiple stroke techniques, as well as improve your overall endurance. Athletes participating in this program must possess the potential to be independent in the water.

- There will be NO PRACTICE on April 3!

- 6:30-7:15 PM - Swim Lesson Style Session
- Athletes looking for more 1:1 support or looking to learn foundations of swimming should sign up for this time slot. In addition, athletes looking to get additional coaching from NOVA Swim coaches should sign up as well.

- Athletes looking to get swim practice in should sign up for this slot. In addition, athletes that are interested in competing after working with NOVA coaches should sign up for this slot.

Rugby

Interested in an intense, fast-paced, team-based sport? Join the Sportable Possums Wheelchair Rugby team – no previous wheelchair rugby experience is required! The beginner/intermediate training curriculum will focus on building a foundational knowledge of the sport, skill development, equipment selection, and teamwork.

Location: Humphrey Calder Community Center - 414 N Thompson St, Richmond, VA 23221
Who: Open to Sportable members, 14 years and older, who have a physical disability that impairs movement of 3-4 limbs and can push themselves in a manual wheelchair. Players may use a powerchair or other assistive device for everyday mobility. Examples of Player Conditions: Quadriplegic Spinal Cord Injuries, Muscular Dystrophy, Multi-limb Amputees, Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. Younger players may join with prior permission from program staff.
Tennis - Adult Intermediate & Advanced

Tennis is one of the most challenging and rewarding of all wheelchair sports. Participants will learn court mobility, stroke technique, the rules and scoring of the game, all while building strength, cardiovascular ability, and self-esteem in a fun community environment.
Note: Athletes must transport their own sports chair and equipment to practices. Chairs can be loaned from Sportable, but there is a limited quantity available. There is no coach for this program at this time.

Who: Open to ALL Sportable members ages 18 & up who have a permanent disability that affects their lower limb(s), including, but not limited to: Spinal Cord Injury, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Amputation, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, etc. Players must be able to propel themselves independently on the court in a manual / power wheelchair. Younger players may join with permission from Program Staff.
Tennis - Youth & Beginner

Tennis is one of the most challenging and rewarding of all adaptive sports. Participants will learn court mobility, stroke technique, the rules and scoring of the game, all while building strength, cardiovascular ability, and self-esteem in a fun community environment. You can play in a sports chair or para-standing this season!

Who: Open to Sportable members, 5 years and older, who have a physical disability that impacts their lower body and can push themselves in a manual wheelchair. Para-standing play will be an option this season! Players who plan to play in a chair do NOT have to use a wheelchair for everyday mobility.
Beginner & Rec Pickleball

Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the country, combines many elements of tennis, badminton, racquetball, and ping-pong.
The game is played on a badminton-size court with two to four players, paddles, and a ball similar to a whiffle ball.
Pickleball is easy to learn and welcomes beginners of all ages and abilities. It can also develop into a fast-paced game of strategy and precision for experienced players.
Participants will learn court mobility, the different strokes and when to use them, and the rules and scoring of the game—all while improving strength and cardiovascular health in a fun group instruction environment.
