Frequently Asked Questions

Sportable offers 16 youth and adult adaptive sports and recreation programs for individuals ages 3 through adult. To qualify, you must have a permanent physical disability or visual impairment and be able to follow age appropriate instruction. Some common diagnoses our athletes have include Spinal Cord Injuries, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Amputation, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, and other physical disabilities that impact their ability to participate in sports and recreation activities designed for non-disabled individuals.

Sportable programs are held throughout the Greater Richmond area depending on the sport. Visit our Program Guide to find our current program offerings or visit our sport program pages for more detailed information about locations.

To take the next step, fill out the Interest Form here and a knowledgeable Sportable staff member will contact you to discuss which programs are the best fit for you and help you get registered.

The Sportable membership costs just $20 per month and is charged to your credit card on a recurring basis. In addition to having access to all 16 programs year-round, you also qualify for a free Family YMCA membership and other great benefits. A membership is required to participate in Sportable programs and you can cancel at any time!

Check out our partners, Jacob's Chance! Jacob's Chance provides inclusive sports and recreational programs for individuals age 5-35 with developmental, intellectual, and/or physical disabilities.  Programs promote personal development and positive relationships! Learn more at JacobsChance.org.

If one of our programs includes a mix of adult and youth athletes, we require our adult athletes (aged 18 or older) to complete a background check with us. The background check is free, submitted through a secure platform, and none of your personal information is stored in our system. We are only reviewing for violent offenses.

These background checks expire every two years. You will be asked to complete another one when your background check expires and you register, as an adult athlete, in a program that has youth athletes registered.

This policy was implemented as a part of our sexual abuse prevention work with the Virginia Department of Health. Our goal is to help create a safe environment for our youth athletes.
