Top 5 Reasons You Don’t Want to Miss the RVA Adaptive Sports Festival

The unmistakable clash of metal rugby wheelchairs colliding during a full-contact game. The familiar swoosh as the Sportable Rim Riders sink another three-pointer. The buzz of the crowd cheering rival power soccer teams to victory.

Plus, an exclusive Q&A with Paralympians and over 50 vendors, the RVA Adaptive Sports Festival will have non-stop action from 10am-2pm this Saturday, March 26 at J.R. Tucker High School.

These are the Top 5 highlights you won’t want to miss!

1. Relentless Rugby

Searching for the adrenaline rush that comes with a full-contact sport as a participant or a spectator? Look no further than wheelchair rugby.

Originally called “Murderball” due to its aggressive nature, wheelchair rugby is an intense, physical sport for athletes with quadriplegia. The rules combine elements of rugby, basketball, and handball and collisions between the specially crafted rugby wheelchairs are a major part of the game.

Try it out on the Mobility Works Court at 11:00 a.m. Then, stick around and watch the Sportable Possums Wheelchair Rugby Team in action when they take on MedStar NRH United at 1:00 p.m.

2. Team USA Q&A

Misconceptions. Disability Culture. Elite Competition.

Get their take on these topics and more when three Team USA elite athletes, Nick Creasey (5-a-side Soccer), Alyssa Gialamas (Swimming), and Chris Marston (Paratriathlon) share their experiences training for the world stage.

Cycling is one of the most inclusive sports as there is a bike to match nearly every individual’s ability, interests, and goals. Meet with experts in adaptive cycling, take a handcycle or recumbent bike for a spin, and get a burst of endorphins!
