The Third Annual River City Slam Proves to be a Golden Set
On June 8-11, Sportable hosted around 50 wheelchair tennis players from across the country in the River City Slam Wheelchair Tennis Tournament. Players competed in coed divisions A through D, Quad Open, and Juniors in both singles and doubles matches. With high temperatures, the players had their work cut out for them; however, each athlete excelled in their respective categories.
The Division A Singles Champion was Sergei Ivanov, who remained undefeated in all three singles matches. The Division A Doubles Champions were Willie Hernandez, the finalist and opponent of Ivanov in the singles match, and Jacob Schmalzriedt.
Representatives of Sportable ensured that their skills wouldn’t go unnoticed – in fact, these Sportable athletes placed in six categories. Chris Lamps was the Division B Singles Consolation Finalist. Evan Wrinkle defended his River City Slam title of Division C Doubles Consolation Champion along with his partner Spencer Davis (JTCC). Will Biringer was a Division D Finalist in both singles and doubles.
Ryan Beale, a longtime Sportable athlete, was the Quad Open Singles Finalist, and was the Quad Open Doubles Champion with his partner Mckenna Woodhead from Clemson Adaptive Sports. Sportable athlete Wyatt Brady was a Doubles Consolation Finalist, along with his partner Carter Hillman (JTCC) in the 18 & under Division.
On the last two days of the tournament, CarMax hosted the Juniors Wheelchair Tennis Camp, coached by Gabby Hesse and Taylor Wingate. The camp housed around 20 junior athletes with lower limb impairments, with ages ranging from 5-18,
The River City Slam wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the sponsors, volunteers, court monitors, and officials who helped facilitate this event. Sportable would also like to thank the presenting sponsor, VAMAC.
