Sportable Hosts Golf Tournament October 16

RICHMOND, VA – (Thursday, September 14, 2023) – Sportable, Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, is proud to host the ninth annual Wayne Samford Memorial Golf Tournament presented by SouthState on Monday, October 16, 2023 at Hunting Hawk Golf Club in Glen Allen, Virginia. Proceeds will directly benefit Sportable’s mission to make adaptive sports accessible throughout the greater Richmond area. Registration is available now at Sportable.org.

“We are proud to once again host the Wayne Samford Memorial Golf Tournament and are grateful to SouthState and other community partners for helping us celebrate Wayne’s impact on the sports community” commented Hunter Leemon, Sportable Executive Director. “The Samford family has continued his legacy of supporting efforts to make sport and recreation possible to those with disabilities in our community. It’s an honor to host the eighth annual edition of this tournament.”

The tournament will have a shotgun start time of 12:00 p.m. at Hunting Hawk Golf Club in Glen Allen, Virginia. Registration is $600 per team, or $175 per individual. The tournament format is Captains Choice, with contests for longest drive, closest to the pin, and other awards.

“My father, Wayne Samford, had a passion for sports and was involved with many community partners that provided programs for individuals with disabilities,” added Jeff Samford, former tournament director. “Sportable’s commitment to creating opportunities for accessibility and inclusiveness in Richmond aligns with the mission of the tournament and we are proud to have such a great organization keep dad’s legacy alive.”

About Wayne Samford
Wayne Samford graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1964 and attended Virginia Commonwealth University. His passion for athletics included 30 years of Divisions I and III college basketball officiating as well as refereeing at the high school level. As an avid softball player for 50 years, he played at the highest level, and was inducted into the Central Virginia ASA Hall of Fame in 1994. He served as the Director of the Central Virginia Softball Special Olympics for nearly three decades. Wayne enjoyed playing golf and sharing his love of sports by coaching little league baseball for over 20 years and was a devoted member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Short Pump. Following his passing in 2014, Wayne’s legacy was honored with the establishment of the Wayne Samford Memorial Golf Tournament.
