Sportable Hosts Kon-Tiki 2-Miler Challenge August 10

RICHMOND, VA – (Thursday, June 30, 2022) – Sportable, Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, is proud to host the Kon-Tiki 2-Miler Challenge on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, 6-8 p.m. at Dorey Park. The event will complement the Kon-Tiki Challenge that kicked off in May when Sportable volunteer Dan Schmitt embarked on a 4,500-mile coast-to-coast bikepacking adventure with a goal to raise $100,000 for Sportable. To take the Kon-Tiki 2-Miler Challenge, register now at Sportable.org.

“We are thrilled to host the Kon-Tiki 2-Miler to take the “Kon-Tiki Challenge” and join in on Dan’s amazing cross-country adventure,” commented Hunter Leemon, Sportable Executive Director. “The event on August 10 will be the perfect opportunity for our community to rally together and run, walk, push, or row two miles while raising funds and awareness for Sportable’s mission.”

The Kon-Tiki 2-Miler Challenge is fully inclusive as individuals of all abilities are encouraged to run, walk, push, or row at their own pace either virtually or participate in person at scenic Dorey Park on August 10. The fee to participate is $35 and includes an official Kon-Tiki Challenge t-shirt and a post-race celebration. One hundred percent of all proceeds from the Kon-Tiki Challenge will go directly to Sportable to provide adaptive sports that impact the lives of hundreds of individuals living with a physical disability or visual impairment.

The fundraising campaign will also include a multi-tiered, peer-to-peer fundraiser that will empower supporters to become advocates for individuals with physical disabilities and to raise critical funds to support adaptive sports in RVA. Individuals can register to participate in the Kon-Tiki 2-Miler and opt-in to create a personal fundraiser and engage their individual networks with personalized appeals throughout July and August. Fundraisers who raise $250 or more will have their registration fee refunded.

As another incentive to encourage participation, all donations and registration fees will be matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000 through the generous support of Dan Schmitt and Sportable Development Director, Cindy Schmitt. “We are excited to support Sportable through the Kon-Tiki Challenge and hope that this matching opportunity will inspire and motivate others to financially support the organization as well as to set their own personal goals that push you a little bit,” said Cindy Schmitt. “The reward is great and it is a win-win for everyone involved.”

The term “Kon-Tiki” symbolizes a personal stretch goal to provoke thought beyond perceived limits and dream about what is possible. Inspired by the true story, Kon-Tiki, which documents the journey of six men who sailed 4,300 miles from Peru on a balsa log raft across the Pacific to the Polynesian islands, Schmitt’s cross country trek is similar in time and distance. His ride commenced on May 21 in Anacortes, Washington and he is currently in Wisconsin, over 2,000 miles in to the 4,500-mile route along the Northern Tier. He is expected to arrive in Bar Harbor, Maine in mid-August. Follow Schmitt’s coast-to-coast journey on Instagram @KonTikiC2C.
