Sportable has created opportunities and transformed the lives of individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments through sport since 2005.
The only adaptive sports club in Central Virginia and one of the top Paralympic sport clubs in the country, Sportable provides sporting opportunities to more than 400 athletes each year by offering a variety of competitive and recreational adaptive sports programs.
Our athletes are all ages, come from different backgrounds, and have varying abilities.
By fostering a fun, inclusive, competitive, and accessible environment, we transform the lives of our athletes and free them to see beyond their disability, enhance their peer relationships and help them to reach their personal finish line.
Since 2005, Sportable has been providing sport and recreational opportunities to those with physical and visual disabilities throughout central Virginia. During that time we have executed thousands of program hours, purchased and provided adaptive sports equipment for hundreds of athletes, and created community partnerships that have enhanced the lives of those with physical and visual disabilities living in our community.
The reason for our success is simple – our people. Our staff, volunteers, and coaches genuinely care for our athletes and are committed to our mission of transforming the lives of our athletes through sport. They push our athletes to see past their disability. They push our athletes to achieve new heights. They create community within their programs and foster environments where lifelong relationships are formed.
Our people embody what we have come to call The Sportable Way. We define The Sportable Way as “enthusiasm with intention” and it is guided by our core values:
Being true to our word and honoring commitments to athletes, partners, and community
The expectation that our community will enjoy a sport for its own sake, while upholding the highest standard of fairness, respect, and camaraderie
Committing to work hard, stay positive, and encourage success in others
Fostering an environment where athletes and volunteers are able to reach their full potential

How did you get involved with Sportable? I was aware of Sportable through my work in the community brain injury field the last few years and through their partnership with the Sheltering Arms Institute. I’ve spent most of my career working in the disability field in statewide organizations and love the idea of shifting focus to the local level especially in terms of how opportunities to be involved in sports and recreation positively impacts the health and wellness of people with disabilities. After learning about an opportunity to join the organization, and meeting with Hunter, board members, and staff, their enthusiasm was contagious and I am thrilled to be a member of this team.

How did you get involved with Sportable? I started volunteering with Sportable when I was getting my Masters in Occupational Therapy at VCU back in 2014. Initially, volunteering was part of a class assignment, but then I enjoyed it so much that I continued. Since then, I’ve volunteered with a variety of programs including power soccer, swimming, kayaking, road racing, cycling, and most recently CP soccer. I also began helping plan the Tailgate fundraising event back in 2016 and grew in my role to eventually serve as Tailgate Chair on the Associate Board (2019-2020) and most recently Chair of the Associate Board. Through all these years of volunteering, I’ve dreamed of one day joining the Sportable team of staff if the right opportunity presented itself. Well now that day is here and I couldn’t be more excited!

The access Sportable provides me to competitive sport, outdoor activities, and active exercise is central to why I find my life so fulfilling. I am able to cycle, kayak, row, and play rugby on a regular basis throughout the year thanks to the Sportable community.
Given my passion for what Sportable does, my role as the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator is a perfect fit. I get to share the Sportable Story with the central Virginia community. By sharing the stories of our athletes and advocating for people with disabilities, I raise awareness and get new people involved with our organization.

How long have you been with Sportable: One year as an employee. Seven years as an athlete parent.
Hometown: Cincinnati, OH
Family: Husband Brian and three adult children: Evan, Elena, and Hannah
Hobbies: Playing pickleball, watching wheelchair basketball, thrift shopping.
How did you get involved with Sportable? My youngest child, Hannah, was born with spina bifida and has been using a wheelchair since she was five years old. At age 11, she started trying adaptive sports with Sportable including tennis, rock climbing, road racing, and wheelchair basketball. While everything she tried was enjoyable, she loved the team aspect of wheelchair basketball and threw herself into that sport.
Through the years playing with the Sportable Spokes, Hannah not only developed as an athlete, but also gained friendships, travel opportunities, confidence, independence, and leadership skills. All this led to her signing to play collegiate women’s wheelchair basketball with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where she is also studying to be a special education teacher—a dream that wouldn’t have been possible without Sportable.
Hannah’s life has been transformed in many positive ways by Sportable and adaptive sports.
Because Sportable has deeply impacted our family, sharing the Sportable story with our community is a dream job for me.
