Active Lifestyles - Fitness Instructor

Job Description: The Fitness Instructor designs and leads engaging, evidence-based exercise programs specifically for active older adults (ages 50+). This role is crucial in helping participants maintain or improve functional strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular health in a safe, supportive, and enjoyable group environment, directly contributing to their overall well-being.
Reports To: Director of Active Lifestyle Programs
Category Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
Schedule: Varying, with required availability for some evening and weekend classes. All classes will be held in person throughout Chesterfield County.
Responsibilities:
- Design and lead dynamic group fitness classes (e.g., balance, low-impact aerobics, strength training, chair yoga) specifically tailored for the physical needs and goals of adults ages 50+.
- Skillfully adapt and modify exercises for individuals with physical limitations, chronic conditions (e.g., arthritis, joint replacements), or varying fitness levels to ensure safety and inclusion.
- Incorporate functional movement patterns that directly support Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as walking, bending, reaching, and lifting.
- Educate and provide individual feedback on proper form, posture, safe movement patterns, and essential injury prevention techniques.
- Foster a positive, encouraging, and highly communicative class environment that promotes community building and social interaction among participants.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism while demonstrating enthusiasm, energy, patience, and empathy throughout all class sessions.
- Manage class logistics, including preparing necessary equipment, music, and attendance records.
- Maintain current industry certifications (see Qualifications) and adhere to all facility safety and operational protocols.
Common Class Formats:
- Low-Impact Aerobics: walking, light aerobics, cardio drumming or dance
- Low-Impact Strength and Conditioning: Bodyweight, resistance bands, or light dumbbells
- Balance & Flexibility: Tai Chi, balance drills, stretching, or yoga
- Chair-Based Classes: For those with limited mobility or balance concerns
Qualifications and Skills:
- Primary Group Fitness or Personal Training Certification from an accredited organization
- Specialized Certifications approved by Director of Active Lifestyle Programs such as: Silver Sneakers, Warrior Roots, Yoga Alliance, SAIL, etc.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification from an accredited provider
- Passionate about Sportable’s mission
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong personal initiative and ability to work independently
- Strong work ethic and high degree of professionalism
Compensation: $35/hour
