Program Coordinator - Active Lifestyles (Part-Time)
Job Description: The Active Lifestyle Program Coordinator provides comprehensive operational support for Sportable’s portfolio of health, wellness, and active lifestyle programming, with a dedicated focus on serving aging populations (50+). Reporting to the Director of Active Lifestyle Programs, this role ensures the seamless delivery of high-quality fitness formats and recreational activities by managing the critical intersection of program logistics, instructor coordination, and participant engagement. This individual acts as a vital bridge between program design and the participant experience, ensuring consistent, inclusive, and impactful programming.
Reports To: Director of Active Lifestyle Programs
Category Type: This is a part-time, hourly position (15-20 hours per week). While a set schedule can be achieved Monday-Friday, schedule flexibility, including occasional night and weekend work, is required.
Location: Primarily based at Beulah Recreation Center (Chesterfield, VA)
Responsibilities:
Program Operations & Session Coordination
- Master Scheduling: Manage the seasonal calendar for all wellness and active lifestyle sessions, ensuring all programs are fully staffed, facility spaces are secured, and schedule changes are communicated to all stakeholders.
- Instructor Liaison: Serve as the secondary point of contact for adjunct and contract instructors, as well as parks & recreation staff; assist with onboarding, resource distribution, and ensuring Sportable’s standards of inclusion are met in every session.
- Program Support: Maintain the technical proficiency to step in as a lead or co-lead instructor for various formats (e.g., functional strength, seated yoga, functional mobility) to prevent class cancellations and ensure a seamless participant experience.
- Site Management: Conduct regular on-site visits to community partner locations to ensure programs are running safely, effectively, and according to the designated curriculum.
Data Stewardship & Logistics
- Reporting & Data Integrity: Assist with the daily collection and entry of attendance and participation data into Salesforce; ensure all participant waivers and health intakes are accurate and up to date for grant reporting.
- Impact Measurement: Support the Director in administering functional assessments and quality-of-life surveys to track and communicate the long-term health outcomes of participants.
- Equipment & Asset Management: Oversee the inventory, sanitation, and transport of wellness-specific equipment (mats, weights, adaptive aids) to various program sites across the Chesterfield area.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Sports Management, or a related field is preferred.
- A nationally recognized Group Fitness/Personal Training certification (e.g., ACE, NASM, ACSM) is highly preferred.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification required (training will be provided, if needed).
Required Experience and Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in fitness instruction, recreation management, or community wellness coordination.
- Experience working with older adults (50+), with the ability to safely implement exercise modifications preferred.
- Experience managing schedules and using CRM databases; experience with Google Suite and Salesforce is a significant plus.
- Must be physically able to demonstrate exercise movements and lead fitness sessions for 45–60 minutes.
- Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs and assist with equipment setup across various terrains (gyms, studios, outdoor spaces).
- Flexible schedule, with the ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends based on the seasonal program calendar.
- Valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
- Reliable personal transportation is required to travel between various program sites across the Chesterfield area.

Active Lifestyles - Fitness Instructor

Job Description: The Fitness Instructor designs and leads engaging, evidence-based exercise programs specifically for active older adults (ages 50+). This role is crucial in helping participants maintain or improve functional strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular health in a safe, supportive, and enjoyable group environment, directly contributing to their overall well-being.
Reports To: Director of Active Lifestyle Programs
Category Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
Schedule: Varying, with required availability for some evening and weekend classes. All classes will be held in person throughout Chesterfield County.
Responsibilities:
- Design and lead dynamic group fitness classes (e.g., balance, low-impact aerobics, strength training, chair yoga) specifically tailored for the physical needs and goals of adults ages 50+.
- Skillfully adapt and modify exercises for individuals with physical limitations, chronic conditions (e.g., arthritis, joint replacements), or varying fitness levels to ensure safety and inclusion.
- Incorporate functional movement patterns that directly support Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as walking, bending, reaching, and lifting.
- Educate and provide individual feedback on proper form, posture, safe movement patterns, and essential injury prevention techniques.
- Foster a positive, encouraging, and highly communicative class environment that promotes community building and social interaction among participants.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism while demonstrating enthusiasm, energy, patience, and empathy throughout all class sessions.
- Manage class logistics, including preparing necessary equipment, music, and attendance records.
- Maintain current industry certifications (see Qualifications) and adhere to all facility safety and operational protocols.
Common Class Formats:
- Low-Impact Aerobics: walking, light aerobics, cardio drumming or dance
- Low-Impact Strength and Conditioning: Bodyweight, resistance bands, or light dumbbells
- Balance & Flexibility: Tai Chi, balance drills, stretching, or yoga
- Chair-Based Classes: For those with limited mobility or balance concerns
Qualifications and Skills:
- Primary Group Fitness or Personal Training Certification from an accredited organization
- Specialized Certifications approved by Director of Active Lifestyle Programs such as: Silver Sneakers, Warrior Roots, Yoga Alliance, SAIL, etc.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification from an accredited provider
- Passionate about Sportable’s mission
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong personal initiative and ability to work independently
- Strong work ethic and high degree of professionalism
