  • Athlete Travel Expenses

Sportable athlete and associate board member Daronte Rollins was one of seven athletes who were able to travel to the NWBA National Tournament in Wichita, Kansas with the support of the RWC Scholarship Fund. Daronte was paralyzed in a car accident in 2014 on his way to freshman orientation at Ferrum College where he had been recruited to play football. Daronte started practicing with Sportable’s recreational basketball program in 2018 and by 2022, he had earned a spot on the competitive adult team, the Sportable Rim Riders. Always pushing to be better, Daronte earned his MSW from VCU in 2020.

  • Adaptive Sports Equipment

Cycling is Sportable’s most popular program and one of the most inclusive sports as there is a bike to match nearly every individual’s ability, training interests, and goals. The program is attractive to beginners discovering new skills, as well as experienced cyclists who compete together on the Road Warriors competitive cycling team. Funds from the RWC Scholarship Fund purchased custom pedals for several recumbent bikes in Sportable’s fleet so athletes like Eleanor Angle could feel endorphins again for the first time since her stroke.

  • Monthly Membership Fees

Sportable members receive over $2,500 in membership benefits each year, but are only required to pay $20 per month for a Sportable membership. The RWC Scholarship Fund underwrites a portion of the costs for Sportable to deliver more than 20 programs annually to ensure membership fees are not a barrier to participation for athletes. Furthermore, athletes that have financial need are able to get full or partial scholarships to participate in Sportable programs cost-free.
