From basketball to kayaking, cycling to swimming, the summer slate of Sportable programs has something for everyone!

Whether you want to play for fun or are searching for a competitive team, check out these summer programs.

Youth Wheelchair Basketball Camp

Learn new skills, shoot some hoops with your friends and – most importantly – have FUN at the Sportable Wheelchair Basketball Camp! Designed specifically for kids ages 5 through high school with permanent lower limb impairments, the two-day camp will focus on individual skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship led by Sportable Sport & Program Development Manager Forrest Lodge and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wheelchair basketball player Hannah Smith.

Dates:
Saturday, August 20, 2022 – 9:30am-4:30pm
Sunday, August 21, 2022 – 9:30am-4:30pm

Location: Glen Allen High School – 10700 Staples Mill Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23060

Who: Players must have a permanent physical disability which consistently reduces the function of the lower limbs to a degree where they cannot run, pivot or jump at the speed and with the control safety, stability and endurance required to play running basketball as an able bodied player. Not all players use wheelchairs for everyday mobility. Players must be able to independently push themselves in a sports wheelchair, have the ability to follow age-appropriate instructions and the endurance to play for long hours.

Archery

Experience the excitement and precision of Adaptive Archery! Sportable is proud to partner with Chesterfield County Parks & Recreation to bring you the basics of archery including rules, safety, and step-by-step shooting form for group-style target archery.

Archery is a fully inclusive sport, with adaptations that can accommodate individuals of all ages and abilities and can be done sitting or standing. Space is limited to 12 athletes per time slot.

Dates: Wednesdays, August 24 – October 12, 2022

Time: Group 1 (4:00-5:00pm) & Group 2 (5:15-6:15pm) **NOTE: Group time preferences will be honored on a first come first serve basis.**

Location: Rockwood Nature Center – 3401 Courthouse Rd, North Chesterfield, VA 23236

Who: This program is for currently registered Sportable members of all ages, youth and adult.

Wheelchair Lacrosse

Wheelchair Lacrosse is perfect for athletes interested in a challenging sport that packs a punch and is played with speed, finesse, and teamwork. Expert coaching is provided to train the team for demanding, fast-paced competition regionally and nationally.

Dates: Mondays, May 16 through August 22, 2022*

*Note there will be no sessions on 5/30, 6/20, and 7/4 due to Holiday scheduling

Time: 5:30 to 7:30pm

Location: Shooters Indoor Sportsplex – 6140 Brad McNeer Parkway, Midlothian, VA 23112

Who: Athletes must be 14+ years of age and have a permanent lower limb impairment to play this sport (e.g. spinal cord injury, amputation, spina bifida) Not all players use wheelchairs for everyday mobility!

Wheelchair Tennis

Tennis is one of the most challenging and rewarding of all wheelchair sports. Participants will learn court mobility, stroke technique, the rules and scoring of the game, all while building strength, cardiovascular ability, and self-esteem in a fun group instruction environment.

With an emphasis on fun and learning, Sportable’s Youth + Beginner Wheelchair Tennis program focuses on individual skill development, learning the rules of the game, and beginning the pathway for athletes to a lifelong sport.

Dates: Saturdays, April 30 – Sept 3, 2022

Time: Youth/Adult Beginners will practice from 10-11:30am / Adult Competitive athletes will practice from 12-2pm

Location: Midlothian High School – 401 Charter Colony Parkway, Midlothian, VA 23114

Who: This program is for individuals ages 5 & up who have a permanent disability that affects their lower limb(s), including, but not limited to: Spinal Cord Injury, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Amputation, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, etc. Players must be able to propel themselves independently on the court in a manual / power wheelchair.

Recreational Cycling

Recreational Cycling is one of the most inclusive sports as there is a bike to match nearly every individual’s ability, needs, and training interests. Athletes in small groups will enjoy beautiful and socially distant rides on the scenic Capital Trail alongside experienced adaptive cycling coaches and qualified volunteers.

Dates: Wednesdays, June 29th-August 17, 2022

Times: 6:00-7:30 PM

Location: Dorey Park – 7400 Dorey Park Drive, Henrico, VA 23231; athletes will cycle along the Virginia Capital Trail

Flatwater Kayaking

Spend an afternoon on the water, learn new skills, and experience thrilling challenges through adventure and kayaking!

Sportable is proud to partner with Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation and Beyond Boundaries to provide athletes with the opportunity to learn the basics of flatwater kayaking alongside the region’s most experienced staff at scenic locations on the James River.

Time: 6:00-8:00 PM

Who: This program is designed for Sportable members and is limited to 10 participants per session. Participants must be age 13+ and must be able to display that they can swim and/or float independently in order to participate in this program. There is a weight capacity of 250lbs for the boats that are used at this program.

Wheelchair Rugby

Interested in an intense, fast-paced, team-based sport? Join the Sportable Possums Wheelchair Rugby team – no previous wheelchair rugby experience is required! The beginner/intermediate training curriculum will focus on safe, socially distanced sessions to build a foundational knowledge of the sport, skill development, equipment selection, and teamwork.

Dates: Mondays, June 6-August 29, 2022

Who: This program is for currently registered Sportable athletes with impairments in all four limbs. Participants must be 14+ years old.

Adaptive Pickleball

Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the country, combines many elements of tennis, badminton, racquetball, and ping-pong. The game is played on a badminton-size court with two to four players, paddles, and a ball similar to a wiffle ball. Pickleball is easy to learn and welcomes beginners of all ages and abilities. It can also develop into a fast-paced game of strategy and precision for experienced players. Participants will learn court mobility, the different strokes and when to use them, and the rules and scoring of the game—all while improving strength and cardiovascular health in a fun group instruction environment.

Dates: Tuesdays, June 21 through August 16, 2022

Time: 6:00 to 8:00pm

Location: Chesterfield Career & Technical Center (CTC) – Hull Street Campus – 13900 Hull Street Rd, Midlothian, VA 23112

Who: This program is for Sportable athletes ages 5 and up with a physical disability. Athletes can play standing or in a sports wheelchair. This program is not for athletes with visual impairments at this time.

Adult Wheelchair Basketball

Designed for adult wheelchair basketball athletes with permanent lower limb impairments (i.e. Spina Bifida, Spinal Cord Injury, Amputee, Cerebral Palsy, and others). Wheelchair basketball promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and FUN! Not all players use wheelchairs for everyday mobility. Players must be able to independently push themselves in a sports wheelchair.

Dates: Thursdays, June 16 through August 25, 2022

Times: 7:00-9:00 PM

Location: Bon Air Baptist Church – 2531 Buford Road, Richmond, VA 23235

Who: This program is for currently registered Sportable athletes only. Players must have a permanent physical disability which consistently reduces the function of the lower limbs to a degree where they cannot run, pivot or jump at the speed and with the control safety, stability and endurance required to play running basketball as an able bodied player. CP Soccer

Designed exclusively for youth ages 5-high school with ambulatory cerebral palsy, stroke, or traumatic brain injury, the CP Soccer Program will focus on introducing skills, socially-distanced drills, small-sided activities, and most importantly – FUN!

The CP Soccer Program is open to players of all levels – no previous experience necessary – who will be led by expert coaches, including former U.S. Paralympic National Team player, Nick Creasey, and USSF A Licensed Soccer Director, Joe Farrell.

Dates: Sundays, July 24-August 14, 2022

Time: 1:30 to 3:00pm

Location: Own Touch Central – 2101 Maywill Street Richmond, VA 23230 (Located inside the U-Turn building. Sessions will be on artificial turf.)

Who: This program is for kids ages 5-high school with ambulatory Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Hemiplegia, or Traumatic Brain Injury which affects motor coordination, yet still enables them to run and kick a ball. No prior soccer experience required!
