RICHMOND, VA – (Thursday, August 5, 2021) – Sportable, Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, is proud to host the 10th Anniversary Sportable Tailgate this fall. Dominion Energy will return as Presenting Sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s event will pay homage to the inaugural Tailgate, hosted in 2012, with a series of celebrations from September 17 through October 3.
Sportable’s signature fundraising event will unite the community with a goal to raise critical funds and awareness for Sportable’s mission to make sports accessible and inclusive for individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments. Tailgate registration is available now at Sportable.org.
“Tailgate season is right around the corner and we are thrilled to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of our Sportable Tailgate,” commented Hunter Leemon, Sportable Executive Director. “We are throwing it back in honor of our first Tailgate held in 2012 at the home of one of our most ardent supporters and with the continued support of Dominion Energy, we are bringing the Tailgate back home this year. Hosting your Tailgate is one of the best ways to support our mission to create top-quality, inclusive sports programs for individuals of all ages and abilities.”
Originally hosted at the home of longtime Sportable supporters, Amy and Rafe Wilkinson, the Sportable Tailgate was established in 2012 as the organization’s first-ever fundraising event. From there, the Tailgate grew into an annual celebration where hundreds of athletes, volunteers, and supporters came together to celebrate athletes’ accomplishments. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, more than 30 socially distanced, do-it-yourself tailgates took place across the Greater Richmond area, raising nearly $95,000 through sponsorships and individual donors.
To commemorate the Tailgate’s 10th Anniversary in 2021, Sportable will replicate the theme from 2012 by encouraging supporters to engage individual networks to host personalized tailgate parties throughout RVA. The fundraiser will span three weekends with incentives and prizes awarded to top fundraisers. A limited edition 10th Anniversary Tailgate t-shirt and Sportable’s iconic neon orange solo cups are on sale now at Sportable.org.
Sportable revenues are 97 percent philanthropic and funded almost entirely through donations and grants. Gifts of any amount will provide critical unrestricted support and will directly impact the lives of hundreds of local residents.
