RICHMOND, VA – (Tuesday, November 16, 2021) – Sportable, Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, is proud to announce that two members of the Sportable Possums wheelchair rugby team, Mandy Marchanio and Josh Smith, have been invited to participate in the USA Wheelchair Rugby 2022 Selection Camp December 1-5, 2021. Marchiano and Smith will be among 40 athletes in attendance at the Lakeshore Foundation U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site striving to make the 16-member 2022 Training Squad.
“We are thrilled that two of our Possums players, Mandy and Josh, have been selected to compete for a roster spot with Team USA,” commented Hunter Leemon, Sportable Executive Director. “To be recognized nationally is a true testament of their hard work and dedication to a sport that Sportable launched just two years ago. What they have accomplished in such a short amount of time is incredible. We are looking forward to seeing them perform on the international stage one day.”
A native of Colonial Heights, Virginia and graduate of VCU, Marchiano began participating in Sportable programs in 2017. She joined the Sportable Possums two years later and has since been recognized multiple times at wheelchair rugby tournaments across the east coast. Most recently, she earned the low pointer, lower division award at the PVA Wheelchair Rugby Invitational in October.
Smith was first introduced to wheelchair rugby at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia in 2014 where he made an immediate connection with the sport. Upon his return to his native Richmond, Virginia, he began participating in Sportable programs and became one of the first members of Richmond’s wheelchair rugby team when it was formed in 2019.
USA Wheelchair Rugby competition season will include the Americas Championships January 23-30 in Medellin, Columbia and WWR World Championship October 8-17 in Vejle, Denmark.
